SULZER Volute Casing forms the stationary pressure envelope of a centrifugal pump. Its primary function is to collect the fluid discharged from the impeller at high velocity and convert that velocity into pressure through the gradually expanding cross-section of the volute passage. The casing also positions the impeller relative to the wear rings, houses the bearing bracket and shaft penetration, and provides the suction and discharge nozzle connections to the piping system.
In slurry and process pump service, the volute casing is exposed to erosive wear from suspended solids, corrosive attack from chemical media, and cyclic pressure loading that can lead to fatigue cracking over extended service life. Wear typically concentrates at the volute cutwater area — the closest point between the impeller tip and the casing wall — where the fluid velocity and turbulence are highest. Flange face corrosion and bearing housing bore wear are also common failure patterns that require replacement rather than repair.
Our SULZER volute casing replacements are produced using FARO 3D laser scanning to capture every hydraulic feature — the volute channel profile, cutwater geometry, bearing housing alignment, and flange bolt pattern — ensuring the new casing restores original pump performance and seals correctly against the casing cover.
