Product Overview

SULZER GAMMA Seal Deflector (also called liquid deflector ring, slinger ring, or oil deflector) is a non-contacting rotary component mounted on the pump shaft between the bearing housing and the mechanical seal or packing area. Its primary function is to deflect any fluid that leaks past the seal away from the bearing housing, preventing contamination of bearing lubricant and extending bearing service life.

The deflector uses centrifugal force — as the shaft rotates, liquid migrating along the shaft is thrown radially outward by the deflector's profile and directed to drain ports or the pump exterior, rather than traveling along the shaft into the bearing compartment. In vertical pump configurations and applications where the seal area is subject to external washdown or condensation, the deflector also prevents water ingress into the bearing housing from the outside.

Deflectors are typically made from non-sparking materials suitable for the pump's operating environment. They must fit the shaft without interfering with rotating elements and must not create a heat source or corrosion path.

Installation Notes
  • Set Screw Type — Position the deflector on the shaft with the concave face oriented toward the seal area. Tighten the set screw(s) evenly against the shaft. Verify free rotation with shaft — no contact with stationary components
  • Interference Fit — Press the deflector onto the shaft to the specified axial position. Check runout at the deflector OD. If supplied with a keyway, ensure the key is fully seated before installation
  • Split Ring Design — Clamp the two halves around the shaft using the supplied bolts. This design allows installation without removing the coupling or other shaft-mounted components
  • During installation, verify that the drain slots or weep holes (if present) are oriented at the lowest point for effective fluid drainage
