SANDPIPER Air Valve Seat (also referred to as the spool valve bore, valve body bore, or pilot valve seat) is the precision-machined internal surface inside the air valve body that the main spool and pilot valve seal against. The air valve seat is not a separate removable component in most SANDPIPER designs — instead, it is the finished bore or seat surface machined directly into the valve body casting. Replacement is accomplished by replacing the complete valve body assembly or by re-sleeving the worn bore.
In the main spool bore, the air valve seat provides the cylindrical sealing surface against which the spool outer diameter seals using O-rings, u-cups, or PTFE seals. The seat surface must maintain tight dimensional control to ensure the spool shifts freely without excessive air bypass. In the pilot valve, the seat is typically a flat or tapered surface that the pilot plunger contacts to seal the pilot air ports.
When the air valve seat wears due to contamination, spool/seal debris, or corrosion, the pump experiences air bypass, reduced pumping efficiency, stalling, or failure to shift. Valve seat wear can be diagnosed by air consumption tests and spool clearance measurements.
