Common Diaphragm Failure Modes

Failure Mode

Symptom

Root Cause

Prevention / Solution

Flex fatigue cracking

Cracks at diaphragm flex zone radius; fluid leakage to air side

Normal wear after extended cycle life; excessive pump speed

Reduce pump speed; upgrade to fabric-reinforced diaphragm

Chemical attack / swelling

Diaphragm softens, swells, or blisters on fluid side

Incompatible elastomer material for the pumped fluid chemistry

Select chemical-resistant elastomer; upgrade to PTFE-faced diaphragm

Abrasive wear

Thinning of diaphragm surface on fluid side; visible scoring

Abrasive particles in fluid eroding diaphragm surface

Use PTFE-faced or fabric-reinforced diaphragm; install inlet strainer

Pinch / clamping failure

Diaphragm tears at outer bolt circle or center hole

Overtorqued bolts, misaligned diaphragm assembly, debris between clamping surfaces

Use torque wrench; verify diaphragm centered before tightening; clean clamping surfaces

Over-pressure rupture

Sudden catastrophic diaphragm burst

Pump operated above maximum rated air pressure; discharge blockage

Install pressure regulator; verify discharge line is not closed against deadhead

Diaphragm Installation Guide
  1. Inspect the New Diaphragm — Verify the diaphragm material, thickness, bolt hole pattern, and center hole match the original
  2. Clean Clamping Surfaces — Remove all debris, old gasket material, and fluid residue from the diaphragm clamping surfaces on the air side and fluid side housings
  3. Center the Diaphragm — Align the diaphragm center hole with the shaft; ensure the diaphragm is not twisted or off-center
  4. Assemble Outer Bolts — Install and loosely tighten the outer bolts; ensure even spacing and no pinching of the diaphragm between the housing halves
  5. Tighten to Torque — Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern to the torque specified for your SANDPIPER model; overtightening can crack the housing or tear the diaphragm
  6. Cycle Test — After installation, operate the pump at low air pressure to verify the diaphragms flex freely and there are no air or fluid leaks at the diaphragm joint
How to Order
  1. SANDPIPER Pump Model & Size — Fastest identification of the correct diaphragm dimensions, bolt pattern, and center hole size
  2. Diaphragm Material — NBR, Neoprene, EPDM, FKM, or PTFE-faced; match to your fluid chemistry, temperature, and abrasiveness
  3. Construction Type — Homogeneous elastomer, fabric-reinforced, or PTFE-faced with elastomer backer
  4. Certification Requirement — Standard industrial, FDA-compliant, or 3A-sanitary certified diaphragm
  5. Quantity — Single diaphragm, pair (both sides), or bulk order for multiple pumps
  6. Delivery — 7–15 days; PTFE-faced diaphragms 15–25 days

FAQ

Q1: How often should SANDPIPER diaphragms be replaced?

A: Diaphragm replacement intervals depend on the fluid type, operating pressure, and duty cycle. In general SANDPIPER chemical service with standard elastomer diaphragms, replacement every 6–12 months is typical. In aggressive or high-cycle service, 3–6 months. Monitor for reduced flow rate, air bubbles in the fluid, or fluid in the air exhaust as indicators of imminent diaphragm failure.

Q2: Can I use a PTFE-faced diaphragm in a pump that originally used an elastomer diaphragm?

A: PTFE-faced diaphragms are direct replacements for elastomer diaphragms in most SANDPIPER models. Note that PTFE-faced diaphragms have slightly different flex characteristics and may require a small increase in air pressure to achieve the same flow rate. They offer significantly better chemical resistance and flex life in aggressive chemical service.

Q3: What is the difference between a bolted diaphragm and a one-piece diaphragm?

A: A bolted diaphragm has a separate center disc that bolts to the diaphragm shaft. A one-piece diaphragm has the center hole molded as an integral part of the diaphragm, with a metal insert that accepts the shaft bolt. Both types are interchangeable on pumps designed for bolted diaphragms, but the one-piece design eliminates potential leak paths at the center seal.
