ANDRITZ Closed Impeller is a hydraulic rotating component in which the vanes are enclosed between a front shroud (suction side) and a back shroud (hub side). Unlike open impellers where the vanes are exposed, the closed impeller creates a fully enclosed flow passage from the impeller eye to the vane exit. This enclosed channel minimizes internal recirculation losses and allows the impeller to achieve the highest hydraulic efficiency of any impeller type in clean fluid service.
The front shroud extends from the impeller eye diameter to the vane tip diameter, forming a complete cover over the vane profile. This shroud also serves as the running surface for the front wear ring, where a controlled clearance with the casing wear ring limits internal leakage. Similarly, the back shroud carries the back wear ring running surface and may include balancing holes to equalize axial thrust.
Closed impellers are the most common impeller type in centrifugal pumps handling clean or low-solids fluids, where maximum efficiency is the priority. They are used across process pumps, water supply, chemical transfer, oil and gas, HVAC, and power generation applications.
Our ANDRITZ closed impellers are produced using FARO 3D scanning for vane profile capture, investment or resin sand casting, CNC machining of all critical fits, and full CMM dimensional verification before dispatch.
