Q1: Can I replace a hub without removing the shaft or pump from service permanently?
A: Yes. Hubs can be replaced without removing the pump or motor from the baseplate. For straight bore hubs, loosen the set screws and pull the hub axially off the shaft using a hub puller. For taper bushing hubs, remove the bushing bolts and tap the bushing loose using the ejection slots. Replace with the new hub, re-check alignment, and the pump is back in service.
Q2: What causes hub bore fretting wear and how can it be prevented?
A: Hub bore fretting is caused by micro-movement between the hub bore and shaft surface under cyclic torque. The primary causes are insufficient interference fit (bore too loose), missing or loose set screws, or a worn key that allows radial hub movement. Prevention: ensure the bore-to-shaft fit is within H7 tolerance, torque set screws to the manufacturer's specification, and replace worn keys during hub replacement.
Q3: Can hubs with different bore sizes on the pump and motor sides be paired in the same coupling assembly?
A: Yes, as long as the hub engagement features (grid slot size, spider leg spacing, disc bolt pattern, or gear tooth form) are the same coupling series and size. The pump-side hub bore and motor-side hub bore can be different diameters. When ordering, specify which hub is for which shaft and the respective bore/keyway dimensions for each.
