Hub Mounting & Installation Guide
  1. Shaft Inspection — Measure shaft diameter and check for burrs, corrosion, or surface damage; shaft material should be compatible with the hub bore fit
  2. Bore Fit Check — For straight bore hubs, verify the shaft OD is within H7 tolerance of the hub bore; a too-tight fit will seize, a too-loose fit will fret and wallow the bore
  3. Key Fit Check — Test-fit the key in the shaft keyseat and hub keyway separately; the key must slide in with light hand pressure -- no hammer fit
  4. Hub Mounting — For straight bore: apply light oil to shaft, slide hub to position, tighten set screws to manufacturer torque. For taper bushing: slide bushing onto shaft, position hub, torque bushing bolts evenly in sequence
  5. Axial Positioning — Position the hub so the flex element (spider, grid, disc pack, or gear sleeve) will align axially with the mating hub on the opposite shaft
  6. Set Screw Torque — Tighten set screws over the key to the specified torque; over-tightening distorts the keyway, under-tightening allows hub movement on the shaft
  7. Post-Mount Check — After mounting, check hub face runout against the shaft; runout ≤ 0.05 mm TIR is acceptable for most pump applications

How to Order
  1. REXNORD Coupling Model & Hub Type — Grid hub, jaw hub, disc hub, or gear hub; reference the existing coupling size if replacing
  2. Shaft Diameter — Pump shaft diameter and motor shaft diameter in mm or inches; specify tolerance grade if other than H7
  3. Keyway Dimensions — Keyway width, depth, and standard (DIN metric or ANSI inch); confirm if the hub is for the pump shaft or motor shaft side
  4. Bore Type — Straight bore + keyway, taper bore + QD/Taper-Lock bushing, or splined bore
  5. Hub Material — Forged steel (standard), alloy steel 4140, SS 304, SS 316, or ductile iron
  6. Balance Grade — Mill-balanced (standard), G6.3, or G2.5 dynamic balance
  7. Quantity — Individual hubs or pairs (matched set for one coupling assembly)
  8. Delivery — 10–20 days after deposit; standard bore and keyway sizes in stock, custom boring adds 3–5 days

FAQ

Q1: Can I replace a hub without removing the shaft or pump from service permanently?

A: Yes. Hubs can be replaced without removing the pump or motor from the baseplate. For straight bore hubs, loosen the set screws and pull the hub axially off the shaft using a hub puller. For taper bushing hubs, remove the bushing bolts and tap the bushing loose using the ejection slots. Replace with the new hub, re-check alignment, and the pump is back in service.

Q2: What causes hub bore fretting wear and how can it be prevented?

A: Hub bore fretting is caused by micro-movement between the hub bore and shaft surface under cyclic torque. The primary causes are insufficient interference fit (bore too loose), missing or loose set screws, or a worn key that allows radial hub movement. Prevention: ensure the bore-to-shaft fit is within H7 tolerance, torque set screws to the manufacturer's specification, and replace worn keys during hub replacement.

Q3: Can hubs with different bore sizes on the pump and motor sides be paired in the same coupling assembly?

A: Yes, as long as the hub engagement features (grid slot size, spider leg spacing, disc bolt pattern, or gear tooth form) are the same coupling series and size. The pump-side hub bore and motor-side hub bore can be different diameters. When ordering, specify which hub is for which shaft and the respective bore/keyway dimensions for each.
