Storage & Preservation Guidelines
  • Clean & Dry Storage — Store couplings in a clean, dry indoor environment at 10–35°C; avoid direct floor contact by using pallets or racks
  • Corrosion Protection — Apply a light rust-preventive oil to all machined steel surfaces (bores, keyways, flange faces) before storage; reapply every 6 months for long-term storage over 12 months
  • Elastomer Element Storage — Store elastomer spiders and grid springs in a dark, cool, ventilated area; avoid direct sunlight, ozone sources (motors, switchgear), and temperature above 35°C. Shelf life for NBR is typically 5 years from vulcanization date
  • Disc Pack Storage — Keep disc packs in their original sealed packaging; the stainless steel packs are corrosion-resistant but the spacer tubes and fasteners are not — moisture can cause thread galling
  • Label & Document — Keep the coupling identification label and the material certification with the stored part; loose or missing certification delays installation

FAQ

Q1: Can I use a REXNORD coupling designed for a centrifugal pump on a progressive cavity pump?

A: Possibly, but the coupling must be re-selected based on torque and service factor. PCPs have higher starting torque and more torque ripple than centrifugal pumps, so the coupling must be sized with a higher service factor. A grid or gear coupling is usually preferred over a jaw or disc coupling for PCP service. We can re-evaluate the selected coupling against the actual PCP duty parameters.

Q2: What is the recommended coupling spare parts inventory for a pump fleet?

A: For each coupling size in the fleet, stock one replacement flex element (spider, grid spring, or disc pack), at least one spare set of set screws and key stock, and one tube of grid lubricant for each grid coupling in service. Coupling hubs rarely fail before the flex element and do not need frequent spare coverage unless the operation is remote and lead times are long.

Q3: Can the coupling be supplied with a spacer spool for easier pump maintenance?

A: Yes, spacer couplings are available for most REXNORD coupling types. The spacer connects two hub flanges and allows the center section (flex element plus spacer) to be removed without disturbing the hubs on the shafts. This enables pump seal or bearing replacement without re-aligning the motor and pump shafts. Specify the required spacer length (drive-to-pump shaft gap) at order time.
