  1. Inspect Shaft Ends — Clean both the motor shaft and pump shaft end faces; remove burrs, corrosion, and old keyway debris
  2. Fit Hubs on Shafts — Slide the coupling hubs onto their respective shafts; for interference-fit hubs, heat the hub evenly before mounting — never hammer a coupling hub onto a shaft
  3. Align the Shafts — Rough-align the motor and pump using a straight edge across the hub faces, then fine-align using a dial indicator or laser alignment tool. Achieve both angular and parallel alignment within the coupling's rated misalignment capacity
  4. Install Flex Element — Mount the flex element (grid spring, elastomer spider, or disc pack) between the hub flanges or sleeves; ensure it is centered and not pinched between the hubs
  5. Install Guards & Coupling Cover — Install the coupling guard before operating; rotating couplings are a serious pinch-point hazard
  6. Operate & Re-check Alignment — Run the pump at operating speed and temperature, then verify alignment again; thermal expansion often shifts the relative position of motor and pump

Q1: Can I replace only the flex element of a REXNORD coupling without replacing the hubs?

A: Yes, the flex element (elastomer spider, grid spring, or disc pack) is a replaceable wear component. The hubs can remain on the shafts unless the hub bore, keyway, or engagement surface is damaged. For grid couplings, also replace the grid lubricant when changing the grid spring.

Q2: What is the most common cause of coupling failure in pump drives?

A: Shaft misalignment is the most frequent cause. Even minor alignment deviation accelerates flex element wear, generates vibration, and overloads pump bearings and seals. Misalignment can be caused by incorrect initial installation, thermal growth, pipe strain on the pump casing, or foundation settlement. Regular alignment checks at each installation event and after pump maintenance are the best prevention.

Q3: Do you supply coupling guards compatible with REXNORD couplings?

A: Yes. We can supply sheet metal or mesh coupling guards to the dimensions of your coupling assembly, compliant with ISO 13857 and OSHA guarding standards. Provide the installed coupling OD and guard length (distance between motor and pump hubs) and we will quote the appropriate guard.
