Coupling Sizing Factors
  • Torque = Power × 9550 / Speed — Calculate the nominal torque from pump power (kW) and operating speed (RPM); apply the service factor
  • Service Factor — Centrifugal pumps: 1.0–1.5; Gear/screw pumps: 1.5–2.0; PCP/AODD/slurry pumps: 2.0–3.0; Reciprocating pumps: 3.0–4.0
  • Bore Capacity — Verify that the coupling selected can accommodate both the motor shaft diameter and the pump shaft diameter within its maximum bore range
  • Speed Limit — The coupling's maximum safe operating speed must exceed the pump operating speed; disc and grid couplings have higher speed limits than gear and jaw couplings
  • Space Envelope — The coupling selected must fit within the available shaft gap (distance between motor shaft end and pump shaft end) and guard clearance
  • Misalignment Tolerance — Select a coupling with misalignment capacity that exceeds the expected alignment capability at installation
Environmental & Service Condition Considerations
  • High Ambient Temperature — For pump rooms with temperatures above 70°C, use all-steel couplings (grid or gear) or disc couplings; avoid elastomeric spider couplings unless Hytrel or FKM type is specified
  • Corrosive Atmosphere — In coastal, chemical, or marine environments, specify SS 316 hubs and stainless disc packs; apply shaft anti-corrosion coating between hub bore and shaft
  • Cyclic & Shock Loads — For pumps with heavy cyclic loading (sludge, slurry, mining) use grid or gear couplings with their higher energy absorption capacity; disc couplings are less tolerant of shock
  • Submerged Service — For submersible pump couplings, specify fully sealed gear coupling or stainless disc coupling with barrier coating; standard elastomeric elements degrade underwater
