Product Overview

John Crane Single Mechanical Seal Water Station (also referred to as a single seal water reservoir or single seal support system) is a pressurized fluid supply system designed to provide clean, cool barrier fluid to the seal faces of a single mechanical seal in a pump. The water station is a self-contained unit consisting of a reservoir tank, a cooling coil or heat exchanger, pressure and temperature instrumentation, and connecting piping, all mounted on a support frame ready for connection to the pump seal chamber.

The purpose of the seal water station is to maintain a constant flow of clean fluid across the mechanical seal faces, removing frictional heat generated at the seal interface and preventing the seal faces from running dry. For John Crane single mechanical seals operating in abrasive, hot, or dry-running conditions, an external seal water station is essential to ensure seal face lubrication and heat dissipation.

John Crane is a globally recognized leader in mechanical seal technology and seal support systems. Our John Crane specification seal water stations are manufactured to match the original John Crane piping plan (API Plan 01, 02, 11, 21, 23, 31, 32, etc.) requirements, with reservoir volumes, cooling capacity, and pressure ratings selected to match the specific John Crane seal model and pump operating parameters.

System Components

Component

Function

Standard Material / Configuration

Reservoir tank

Stores buffer/barrier fluid volume; accommodates thermal expansion and fluid loss

SS 304, 1–20 L capacity; sight glass for fluid level indication; vent valve

Cooling coil / heat exchanger

Removes heat from the barrier fluid before it recirculates to the seal faces

SS 316 coil inside reservoir (water-cooled) or finned tube air-cooled radiator

Pressure gauge & relief valve

Monitors system pressure; prevents over-pressurization from thermal expansion

0–16 bar gauge (standard); SS internals; relief valve set per seal pressure spec

Temperature indicator

Monitors barrier fluid temperature leaving and returning to the reservoir

Bi-metal dial thermometer or RTD probe with local display

Level switch (optional)

Triggers alarm or pump shut-down if barrier fluid level drops below minimum

Float type or magnetic reed type; NAMUR or dry contact output

Circulation piping

Connects reservoir to seal chamber; supplies fluid to seal faces and returns heated fluid

SS 304/316 tubing; 6–12 mm OD; Swagelok-type compression fittings

Support frame

Mounts all components in a compact assembly; wall-mount or floor-mount options

SS 304 or painted carbon steel; pre-designed for close-coupled pump installation

Operating Principle

The seal water station operates on the thermosyphon principle for single seal applications: heat generated at the mechanical seal face is transferred to the barrier fluid in the seal chamber. The heated fluid rises by natural convection through the return line into the reservoir, where it passes through the cooling coil and is cooled by the external cooling water supply. The cooled fluid then flows by gravity back down through the supply line into the seal chamber, establishing a continuous natural circulation loop that maintains the seal face temperature within the designed operating range.

For forced circulation applications, a small circulation pump can be added to the water station configuration to maintain flow when natural convection is insufficient due to long piping runs, high seal heat generation, or low viscosity barrier fluids. John Crane single seal water stations are typically configured per API Plan 02 (non-pressurized dead-ended reservoir) or Plan 23 (pressurized circulation with cooler) depending on the single seal arrangement and operating conditions.

Configuration Options
  • Reservoir Volume — 1 L, 2 L, 5 L, 10 L, 20 L standard; custom volumes for extended seal face cooling
  • Pressure Rating — Unpressurized (atmospheric vented) for Plan 02; Pressurized up to 16 bar with nitrogen blanket for Plan 23
  • Cooling Method — Internal cooling coil (water-cooled), external finned-tube air-cooled radiator, or without cooler for low-heat applications
  • Material Grade — SS 304 (standard), SS 316 (corrosive/caustic environments), carbon steel (cost-sensitive)
  • Instrumentation Package — Basic (pressure gauge + thermometer) or Instrumented (level switch + temperature transmitter + remote alarm output)
  • Mounting — Wall bracket, floor stand, or pump adapter bracket for on-pump mounting (close-coupled configurations)
Why Choose Our John Crane Seal Water Stations
  • API/John Crane Plan Compliant — Configured to match John Crane standard piping plans (API Plan 01, 02, 11, 21, 23, 31, 32); ensures compatibility with existing seal installations
  • Direct Replacement — Dimensional match to John Crane original water stations for retrofit without re-piping; reservoir mounting bolt pattern, port sizes, and connection arrangement verified
  • Cooling Capacity Matched — Cooler coil area and cooling water flow rate calculated per John Crane heat generation curves for the specific seal type, size, and operating conditions
  • Material Compatibility Verified — Reservoir, piping, and wetted components in SS 304/316 to prevent contamination of the barrier fluid and corrosion from process fluids in case of seal leakage
  • Pre-Charged & Tested — Each water station is pressure-tested, cleaned, and shipped with all fittings and mounting hardware; ready for installation and connection on site
