Product Overview

John Crane Dual Mechanical Seal Water Station (also referred to as a dual seal support system or pressurized barrier fluid unit) is a closed-loop pressurized fluid supply system designed to provide clean, cool barrier fluid under positive pressure to a dual mechanical seal arrangement in a pump. Unlike a single seal water station, a dual seal system maintains barrier fluid pressure above the pump process fluid pressure, ensuring that any leakage across the inboard seal face is barrier fluid entering the process, not process fluid escaping to the environment.

The dual seal water station is a complete skid-mounted assembly consisting of a pressurized reservoir (accumulator-type or bladder-type), a circulation pump (for forced-loop systems), pressure regulation and relief components, cooling heat exchanger, instrumentation panel, and interconnecting piping. It operates as a closed loop: barrier fluid is pressurized by an external nitrogen source or a small dedicated pump, circulated through the dual seal chamber, cooled in the heat exchanger, filtered, and returned to the reservoir for re-pressurization.

Dual seal support systems are specified for applications where zero process fluid leakage to the environment is mandated — toxic, flammable, corrosive, or environmentally hazardous fluids. John Crane API Plan 53A, 53B, 53C, and 54 piping plans are the industry-standard configurations for dual pressurized seal support systems. Our John Crane specification dual seal water stations are manufactured to match John Crane original dimensions, pressure ratings, and piping plan configurations for direct retrofit or new installation.

System Components & Configuration

Component

Function

Standard Specification

Pressurized reservoir (accumulator)

Stores barrier fluid under positive pressure; accommodates thermal expansion and small fluid losses

SS 304/316; 5–50 L capacity; pressure rating 16–40 bar; bladder or piston type

Circulation pump

Forced circulation of barrier fluid through the dual seal chamber and heat exchanger

Gear pump or centrifugal pump; 0.5–3 kW; SS 316 wetted parts; NEMA or IEC motor

Heat exchanger (cooler)

Removes frictional heat from barrier fluid generated at the dual seal faces

Shell-and-tube or plate type; SS 316 tubes; cooling water or air-cooled; sized per seal heat load

Pressure regulator & relief valve

Maintains constant barrier fluid pressure above process pressure; prevents over-pressurization

Self-relieving pressure regulator; relief valve set at 1.1× system working pressure

Filter

Removes particulates from barrier fluid to prevent abrasive wear at seal faces

Duplex filter with SS mesh or pleated element; 10–50 micron; differential pressure indicator

Instrumentation panel

Displays and transmits pressure, temperature, flow rate, and reservoir level

Pressure gauge, RTD thermometer, flow sight glass, level switch; 4–20 mA transmitters optional

Nitrogen supply connection

Provides pressurization gas to the reservoir headspace or accumulator gas side

1/4” NPT connection; regulated from plant nitrogen supply or nitrogen cylinder pack

Configuration Description

Pressure Source

Circulation Method

Typical Application

53A

Pressurized reservoir with external nitrogen blanket; barrier fluid circulated by internal pumping ring

Nitrogen regulated to 1–3 bar above process pressure

Pumping ring (natural circulation)

Standard dual seal, moderate seal heat generation

53B

Pressurized bladder accumulator; barrier fluid pressure maintained by pre-charged bladder

Pre-charged bladder (no external gas required)

Pumping ring (natural circulation)

Remote installations, no plant nitrogen available

53C

Pressurized system with piston accumulator and forced circulation pump

Piston accumulator + external pump

Forced (external circulation pump)

High heat load, large seals, high-speed pumps

54

Centralized pressurized barrier fluid supply for multiple pumps sharing one system

Central nitrogen supply + plant-wide circulation loop

Forced (central circulation pump)

Multiple dual seal pumps in one process unit (e.g., refinery, chemical plant)

Why Choose Our John Crane Dual Seal Water Stations
  • API Plan Compliance — Configurable to API 53A, 53B, 53C, or 54; all pressure-containing components rated to the specified plan and seal chamber pressure requirements
  • Pressure > Process Design — Barrier fluid pressure maintained 1–3 bar above pump process pressure at all operating conditions, ensuring the primary seal always leaks barrier fluid inward, never process fluid outward
  • Redundant Safety Features — Dual relief valves, low-pressure alarm, high-temperature alarm, and low-reservoir level shut-down contacts as standard safety package
  • Heat Removal Capacity — Heat exchanger sized per John Crane seal heat generation curves; typical cooling capacity sufficient to maintain barrier fluid temperature at 15–25°C above cooling water inlet
  • Turnkey Assembly — Fully assembled, pressure-tested, and factory-calibrated before shipping; includes all interconnecting hoses, fittings, and installation brackets
